Poppy's Return by Avi, illustrations by Brian Floca, is a wonderful book. I absolutely adored this book. And when I finished it, my husband, Jim, read it and loved it just as much as I did. Of course, now I want to read all of his other books, too! Apparently, there are many books about Poppy, her beloved Rye, and many of the other characters in the "Tales from Dimwood Forest" series of books. I guess I have my summer reading list now!

The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes was very sweet, a feel good book for 7 or 8 year olds. I like the way the author set up the year in quarters by talking about a specific person in his life; his teacher, his dad, his sister, and his mom.

Why We Write edited by Meredith Maran is the book I just finished reading. As a writer, it was very interesting to me and I enjoyed it immensely. Although I've heard of the majority of the writers that were interviewed for the book, there were several that I had never heard of nor had I ever read anything by them. I have now added most of them to my short list of authors that I want to read.

Animal Family by Randall Jarrell with Illustrations by Maurice Sendak is a fantasy story that was a nice change for me and something I haven't read much of over the years. But I was interested in this book because of Randall Jarrell, who I recently learned, had committed suicide. I read that after he turned 50, he became very depressed about aging. He went through several bouts of depression going on and off medication. Although it was reported an accident when he was struck by a car and killed, many who knew him thought it was suicide. Jarrell was only 51 years old.

Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo and illustrations by K. G. Campbell is the Newbury Medal winner for 2014. When I started reading this book, a middle grade selection, I was pleasantly surprised at the combination of novel and comic strip.

Doll Bones by Holly Black with illustrations by Eliza Wheeler is a fun read that I think any middle grade child will enjoy. The story takes three best friends, Zach, Poppy, and Alice, on an adventure to return a doll to its proper grave, with its parents who are long dead.

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen I love reading children's books (no surprise there, I guess) and add them into my book reading list as often as possible. I just finished a really good story, by Carl Hiaasen, called "Hoot". I've been especially interested in reading some of the prize winning novels and found out that his book "Hoot" was a Newbery Honor winner in 2002.
